Learn How to get an Education Grant From the Government

Institutional grants

An institutional grant is a financial aid that is provided by the respective school, college, or university. The amount of grant money may vary from college to college. Always check about the institutional grant before enrolling in a college. For example,

  • Capella University provides different financial awards ranging from $600 to $12,000.
  • Wichita State University spends $100 million annually to award grants to students.
  • Arizona State University also awards grants to its students.

Private grants

Private grants are less common than public grants. Graduate Fellowship Grants and Jacob Javits Fellowship programs provide grants for engineering and art students, respectively.

  1. Get some knowledge about federal government grants and choose the best for you

Go through the following types of grants and choose the best for you.

Federal Pell Grants

The largest grant program offered by the U.S. Department of Education is Pell Grant that sponsor only to undergraduate students. Students from low-income families who do not have a graduate or professional degree can apply for Pell Grant. You should have to fill FASFA to apply for Pell Grant. FASFA will generate a number for the financial strength of a family that is called expected family contribution (EFC). The greater the EFC number the lesser the chance to get the grant. You will receive the maximum Pell Grant award if generated EFC is zero. Those families having more EFC than 5576 cannot get this grant. The highest Pell Grant awarded to students was $6,195 and the lowest was $650 in 2019-2020. The amount of grant money varies every year. The eligibility of a student for Pell Grant also depends on institutional attendance cost, part-or-full time status of the student, and his planned attendance length. The student will receive full grant money from his school and this will not be affected if he/she is also receiving financial aid from any other program.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)

FSEOG is provided by the U.S. Department of Education to those students who are eligible for Pell Grant. Students in financial need get this grant. FSEOG is not provided to all schools and colleges so, always consider those schools for admission that are offering both Pell Grant and FSEOG. An undergraduate student can get $100 to $4,000 once a year in this grant. FSEOG amount depends upon the financial status, the sum of other grants he receives, and availability of funds’ money at school. If you will apply early for FSEOG, your chances of getting this grant will be increased.

Iraq and Afghanistan services grants

If one of your parents or guardians died while performing military services in Iraq and Afghanistan, your education can be sponsored by Iraq and Afghanistan services grant. This type of aid is also provided to schools or colleges to help eligible students pay for their learning costs. You can meet the eligibility criteria if you are ineligible for Pell Grant due to EFC and your age must be less than 24 years or at least you should be enrolled in college at the time of your parents’ death. You will receive the same amount as awarded in the maximum Federal Pell Grant.
