Learn 8 Tips for Buying a New Mattress

Spring coils with a foam overlay are used in hybrid mattresses. A good hybrid mattress combines the best of both foam and innerspring versions, while a poor hybrid is more likely to have the worst of both. Hybrid mattresses are available with either memory foam or latex foam.

Air mattresses let you modify the firmness to your liking, and many allow both bed partners to customize their portion of the bed to their liking. You will, however, pay the price for this ease at the cash register.

Skimp on the Foundation

If you have a platform bed, you won’t need a foundation (though some people still refer to them as box springs out of habit), but if you don’t have a bed frame and don’t want your mattress to be on the floor, you’ll need a foundation to lift it. However, there is no need to spend a lot of money on what is essentially a wooden box covered in cloth. If your previous foundation is still in good condition and you’re purchasing the same size mattress, you may not need to purchase a new one at all. When purchasing a new foundation, request that a lower-priced model be substituted for the one that comes with your mattress.

A typical bed frame that previously housed a foundation box spring and a mattress can be changed to a platform-style bed by removing the foundation/box spring and placing wooden slats or a sheet of plywood over the bed frame to hold the new mattress. Most modern mattresses work just fine without a box spring, though manufacturers will make every effort to sell you one.

What About Buying Online?

Buying a mattress online may appear dangerous, but it is becoming a popular option. There are numerous reasons for this, including the absence of a pushy salesperson, a wide range of options, access to luxury brands, lower pricing, and the avoidance of sales tax, to name a few. However, there are undoubtedly some drawbacks: You can’t try the mattress before you buy (unless you happened to try out the identical model in a brick and mortar store before buying online), returns are a pain, you’ll have to dispose of your old mattress yourself, there’s no salesperson support, and there’s no possibility to negotiate the price.

As a result, if you’re going to buy something online, do your homework, find a reliable site, and ensure a flawless return policy.
