Guidelines for Blind or people with Low Vision

 
  • Someone is considered legally blind when his eyesight cannot be improved better than 20/200. Or if the visual field is less than or equal to 20 degrees.
  • If the worker does not fall in this category, he can still gain disability benefits if the eyesight is weak enough to prevent him from working.
  • The earnings limit for blind people is $2,190 per month that is higher than non-blind disabled workers.

Guidelines for Disabled Widows or Widowers

 Disability benefits may be allocated to the widow, widower, or surviving divorced partner if the worker dies. But with the following conditions

  • The age of a widow, widowed, or divorced partner should be 50 – 60 yrs.
  • The widow, widowed, or divorced spouse has any medical condition described in the list of disabling conditions.
  • The disability happens before or within 7 years of the worker’s demise.

Guidelines for a Disabled Child

  • A worker’s child receives disability benefits at the age of 18, whether the child is disabled or not. 
  • If a child is disabled, that child can receive disability benefit on a social security number of his parents upon reaching age 18.
  • If a parent is deceased or starts receiving retirement or disability benefits, and before an adult age child of 22 gets disabled, he may continue to get disability benefit on parent’s record. And it is called child’s benefit.
  • After the age of 22, if an unmarried adopted child, a stepchild, grandchild, or step-grandchild becomes disabled, can get benefits, and is called the disabled adult child. And the earning of an adult child should not exceed more than $1,310 a month for 2021. 
  • If an adult child is already being paid for disability benefits on their record, the parent record is checked for any payable disability benefit. The adult child receives the one, whichever is higher, along with Medicare benefits. 
  •  If the adult child gets married, these benefits might come to an end. However, if a disabled adult child marries another disabled person, it would not affect the disability benefits.
  • As the rule changes from time to time, so you can call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask any questions about the ruling. 

You can apply for SSDI benefits online at any age. However, it takes 3 to 5 months for SSI or SSDI Application to be processed. If your application rejects, and you believe that you deserve disability benefits, you should hire an advocate to defend and represent you.
